In an attempt to clean up some stash fabrics I made three baby quilts with this simple “Square in a Square” pattern.
So quick and mindless to make, I really enjoyed the process. For this one, I chose a combo of blues, greens, and grays. Really hard to mess up these colors!
For finishing, I stitched in the ditch around the outside of each large square and then tied the center of each block with white yarn.
A little sidenote that I noticed while choosing fabrics for this quilt: over the years I’ve actively used up or destashed a lot of my novelty prints because I had too many of them. Now I’m at the place where I have too few! Sometimes baby quilts need just a few cute animals etc., right?! Something to remember next time I’m fabric shopping…
p.s. In case you’re curious, I think I cut the fabric strips at 3″ wide.

Beautiful quilts! lately I'm really drawn to simple patchwork and I'm feeling the need also to stash bust… maybe I'll make one of these! But first its tackling my giant pile of WIPs…..

I had to chuckle at your "simple and mindless to make" comment. When I first started quilting, I made a few baby quilts like this….and spent hours planning and choosing fabrics for the squares LOL.
I guess it is all a matter of experience. Great idea to use up some leftovers though..

Your color choices are stunning as usual.

Because I am new to quilting, I had no novelty prints. In an effort to correct that – I went overboard – LOL. Becoming a fabric hoarder is easy. Would you like me to share some? I have loved following your blog. Please send a private message if interested. 🙂

It's a beautiful quilt, really lovely. I'm looking forward to seeing the next two.
One of the reasons I really enjoy reading your blog is that you discuss what quilting means to you. I can relate so much to what you say about enjoying the process and quilting bringing something to your life that being a wife and mother doesn't. It's only about a year since I made my first quilt, after my third baby, and it has been the most amazingly satisfying discovery, so I spend a lot of time thinking about why it is that I enjoy it so much, what it gives me that other activities or parts of my life don't. I think you summed it up when you said you enjoyed the process! Family life is wonderful but chaotic (wonderful because it's chaotic), and full of seemingly never-ending tasks. With making quilts, I love the creativity, the choices, but I also love the sense of progression ('I'm half way through piecing this top'; 'I've stitched down three sides of the binding' etc) and the mindfulness of repetitive tasks along the way. It is truly meditative. And it is all mine.
Thank you for finding time in your no doubt busy life to share your thoughts and your wonderful quilts. Excuse me for being a bit gushy but I have no friends who are remotely interested in quilting so your blog gives me that connection to someone who I know understands!

Gorgeous! I love making baby quilts also because of the smaller size 🙂 Wish I could put colours together like you 🙂

How lovely – the 3" size is a good one for showcasing the great fabrics. Delightful 🙂

Love these quilts so much! I sewed up something similar this weekend and started with 3" strips but my blocks were too big after one square, let alone a second border. How big did your blocks/quilts come out at if I can ask? My blocks were 8" finished (a 3" square with one 3" border) and I did and 4×5 block layout (40" x 32" finished).
