Working on my own crazy version of Any Way You Slice It by Denyse Schmidt. I’m not following the pattern in her book, since I can’t stand using templates if it’s not absolutely necessary.
Here’s how I do it instead. (and it’s much faster!) I’m trimming my finished blocks to 7″, so I cut my blocks to 9″. Cut five – 9″ blocks. Stack them up and cut through all five layers. Make your lines as straight or wonky as you want, just make sure you end up with five sections. Now sew them together, switching them around so that one fabric is not in the same block twice.
The only down side to this method is that you will now have 5 blocks that have the same fabrics in them. If you look closely you can see this, but once I have a whole quilt put together, I will be the only one to ever know that little secret! It will look pretty random to the casual observer!
Excellent "short cut" for this quilt – I love it!
REALLY love this 🙂
I'm loving this!!! Thanks for sharing your process. I think one of these fun quilts is in my immediate future.
Looks great so far! And it sounds like a really fun way to speed up the process!
Looking good! Thanks for the progress report!
love it jolene! can't wait to see it finished. thanks for the run down and for the "in process" pics. i love seeing each step.
Thanks for the tips – these blocks look fabulous!
How liberating to step away from the templates and get such a striking set of blocks!
That's how I'd do it too. It won't show up a bit that you did it this way instead of the templates. Looks great already!
Like it ! What vibrancy!
ooh! what a great idea. i just put together some blocks (sort of) like this and i cut out and then sewed a whole bunch of strips together first. this method would be much quicker!
