Ok, I’m not going to the beach, but I will be going away for a few days and I had the urge to make myself a bag. I wanted something casual but fun. I started out with this log cabin block for a pocket on the front.
I used some thick muslin that had been sitting on the shelf for a long time. My first version I interfaced with heavy interfacing, but decided that was too stiff. I wasn’t actually wanting this thing to walk on it’s own! I ended up using a single layer of this muslin, and my favorite Nicey Jane print for the lining.
I made myself use my favorite fabrics. I’m always wanting to save them for the ‘perfect’ project, but really, what’s more perfect than right now? And who knows, next year I’ll be in love with something else!
I put two pockets on the inside and attatched those little clasp thingies. I’m hoping it will be handy to clip my cellphone case to, rather than having it disappear at the bottom of the bag.
On the back side of the bag I did an outside pocket and lined it with a fun stripe. I didn’t use a pattern for this bag, but mentally went by this tutorial (just for assembly and cutting) I cut my bag body 18″ x 20″, and the handles 4.5″ x 20″. If you have any other questions, I’d love to answer, just make sure your blog setting are set so that I can reply:)
O my heck, this super fun bag just brightened my last hour at work 🙂 SO cute and I love the pockets and clasps… def. going on my drawing board as well!
Also love the fact that you decided to use your favorite fabrics – I need to jump into that mentality more often. I dont want to be a hoarder, I want to create with those beautiful fabrics! 🙂
I love it! So fun and beach-y!
Looove it!!
i really love this…you did an amazing job…..go you for using your favorite fabrics. that is something i struggle with
fantastic and practical. I love the idea of puting the claspy things on the inside of the bag. genius!
Fantastic bag! The clippy thingies are a great idea, I hate not being able to find my phone! I like that you used your favourites fabrics, I'm the same with new clothes lol =D
I agree on the clasps on the inside…so practical. Do you know where you got the fabric on the inside of the log cabin block (the VW bus)?
A sublime use of fabric. Lovely!
I love it.
I like the way you made yourself use some of your favourite fabrics. i have that problem, I like them too much to cut into them so they sit unused in a cupboard. It would be much better to be able to see them everyday on something I use.
The clasp thingies are a great idea too.
What a great bag! Love all the details, but especially the fabrics.
I love this bag! The colors and fabrics are perfection!
I think this is a great way to use your favs! Love the bag.
I have that nicey Jane print, and as much as I love it, I was having a hard time figuring out what in my stash will match it. Great idea to go scrappy!
That is super fun and I love the fussy cut in the middle of the block! Great job!
Love the colors of your bag! They just say holiday, don't they!! Enjoy your few days away!
Cute as can be- what a fun bunch of colors!!
Lovely and cute bag! Makes me smile!
Such a great bag! I love the colors. (And the stripes make the bag!)
I just came over from your other blog and was greeted by that awesome bag. I NEED it!
LOVELY – and LOVE your other blog, too – It really makes my day. I have a technical question on your hope valley quilt… did you use your domestic machine to quilt it and HOW did you do it without puckers??? It looks fantastic. I have a whole fat quarter set of Hope Valley that might just be waiting for this project. elizabethlehman@hotmail.com
I love that bag! I just found your blog and amazed to see that I favourited that same bag on Flickr about an hour ago!!
I am just about to start bags! This is perfect timing! Great inspiration. (:
This is such a lovely bag! The log cabin block just makes it, and what a cool print that is!
