This striking quilt pattern is such a fun one to make! The free pattern is here. I would say a design wall is almost essential for this one. Start cutting your center pieces and move out, choosing fabrics as you go. You can make so many different looks, by watching your colors and values. I wanted my central squares going horizontally and vertically to stand out, so I did them all in hot pinks. Otherwise, I didn’t worry too much about values. And look at the design that happened! It’s only when you look at it in a small thumbnail that it becomes interesting.
Isn’t that fun? And by changing up the values it can have so many different looks. I’d say not to sweat it as you go, no matter what fabrics you choose, the final design will be interesting!
Size ended up at around 70″ square, although I had to cut off a little more than I wanted because something didn’t line up quite right while quilting. Maybe I didn’t pin it well enough. But now that it’s all finished and washed, it looks just like the vibrant quirky quilt it was meant to be!
The backing is an extra soft and lovely vintage sheet in blue floral. One of those that I had been saving for a ‘special project’ .
I’m saying that I will definitely consider another one of these in the future. I’d also like to try downsizing it to finish at 42″ square so I could make it as a baby quilt.
This is a perfect pattern for some of those wild and crazy prints that you just don’t know what to do with. I think almost any fabrics could look good together in this pattern!

This is a beautiful pattern, and love the colors you used. What a great scrap quilt! I have lots of scraps that could use this. I would worry about so many bias edges but it looks like you did a great job containing it. Maybe a border would help?
Yes, the quilting skewed it slightly, so the design doesn't end up completely square. It's such a busy design that you can hardly notice it though!

Hi Jolene, I have never come across this pattern before but I find it extremely intriguing, plus it's a scrap quilt! I would never have thought that the pattern was an antique from looking at your quilt so I appreciate you showing the original quilt that you found. Thanks for sharing a link to the pattern, it is now in my "to-do" list of patterns. As always, I love your fabrics and your design choices. This quilt reminds me of my grandmother who is my inspiration for becoming a male-quilter.
