This simple baby quilt was made from a design roll of Florence by Denyse Schmidt. A design roll is just like a jelly roll, only it usually refers to other brands than Moda. This means that design rolls have a few less strips (like 30 rather than 40) because Moda collections tend to have 40 different fabrics in a collection, whereas other brands tend to have a few less.
It was just the right size to make this quilt. I purchased mine from Mad About Patchwork, but sadly this one is out of stock. There are design rolls from a few other collections available right now though. This is such a fun way to try out a fabric collection and see if you like it.
I used the Scrappy Trip Around the World tutorial again. I used a different layout for the blocks though, having them all go in one direction.
I’m really happy with how this collection worked using this pattern. I think that these fabrics all have similar values, (lightness/darkness) in this case they’re all medium to dark values. This makes the fabrics flow from block to block and you hardly pick out the separate blocks.
This quilt is backed in Kaffe Fassett Persimmon (my all time favorite red solid) so it’s very soft with a lovely texture.

How cool … I'm making a quilt at the moment using the exact same fabric and cut! It is 'All in the Family' by Camille Roskelley from her first book. But I have been having problems as most of the roll is not quite 2.5" wide. Did that happen to you? My seams will be a bit little. I'm so pleased to see this – good motivation to get finished! And it's also good to see what someone else uses for the backing. 🙂
Yes, it did! I was going to mention it in this post and forgot! I couldn't figure out why my blocks weren't quite lining up, and finally realized that my design roll strips were only 2.25" wide. For some patterns that could definitely by an issue! I hope you get yours figured out.

Oh wow that's beautiful. I love the way the Scrappy Trip block means the viewer keeps trying to find a pattern and getting interrupted with each new fabric. Such a great quillt

I like Florence. I feel it's not as widely used as flea market fancy but the colors are really nice.

I actually wish I had looked at this post sooner. I ordered a yard of the Florence Calligraphy Loops print for a binding, but now that it is here I see it is a rather larger scale print than I was expecting. Might have to buy some of a different print 🙂
