A new exciting idea! I’ve fallen in line with the Botanics fabric collection, but I’ve also been on a strict fabric buying diet, so I decided to mimic the colors with fabrics pulled from my stash…
I’m not sure what scale to make these blocks. To make this a lap size quilt, I need to make each geese unit at least 4″x8″, but then I know I’ll have to add or substitute a lot of these fabrics because I won’t have enough.
I could make a small quilt, but somehow this design is not saying ‘baby’ to me. It really needs to be a larger quilt!
I’m trying something different by PLANNING ahead! Normally I just dive into a quilt and figure it out as I go. This time, I’m going to do it right!
You could always swap with someone to get what you need. I like your quilt layout., the colors will be wonderful with your little pile.
Your quilts are always done 'right' . Looking forward to seeing this in progress . Happy New Year
What a good girl you are, to stick to your diet in the face of Botanics. Can't wait to see this quilt unfold.
Great way to start the New Year, a new plan and new quilt. I may have to skip the Botanics too, since I just splurged on some Liberty. A large flying geese from the stash sounds like fun.
Your plan looks gorgeous!
I'm drooling over your plan! That's a gorgeous color layout! Can I copy you? Please? Keep us posted on this! We might even have a QAL in our hands!
Great idea to mimic the colors! I have wanted to make a flying geese quilt but wasn't sure what size. I can't wait to see this one.
Oh my goodness. Your blog is like going to the fireworks on the 4th of July. Each quilt is so pretty that I can not pick a favorite. I have been retired for three years and with the extra time that I have now, I have had a rebirth of my love of sewing and just recently started quilting. I am out to learn everything that I can. Your blog is a huge inspiration. I am your newest follower.
I would be honored to have you visit.
Your new blogging sister, Connie 🙂
I'm just impressed you found pencil crayons that match the colours of the fabric you are using. That's the hardest part for me. Your design looks amazing! I can't wait to see it as a quilt!
Super pretty plan. I think if your pulling from stash you're already going for something a little scrappy, so go big and add other fabrics as necessary!!
… That said, I'm a fabric hoarder and add to my stash with ridiculous regularity so would it be wrong for me to vote that you buy, buy, buy? Or as someone else mentioned, you could offer to trade with someone?
E xx
Fabulous design!
I think it's great that you use your own stash first… it's something I have to force myself to do, too. And when I do, I'm always surprised, how many matching colors I actually have 🙂
The design looks great! I'm looking torward to seeing how it turns out, especially what size you decide on!
Great design
Sometimes having limitations can make you consider something you never would have tried before! Can't wait to see how it turns out!
This is amazing! I'm one of those quilters that need to plan everything! 😀 I've got two notebooks full of sewing designs and ideas that I drew.
How fun to pull out the colored pencils and have a go at it on paper first!
I concur with the trading idea. Also, you could figure out how large you can possibly make it (I know, lots of math), and then put unequal borders around it. Maybe a gray sketch like print, if you have it.
I love your notebook and colored pencils. Did you make the grid paper? I'm also trying to work off my stash (we'll see how long this resolution lasts!). Your work is beautiful; I look forward to seeing this come together!
Nice! It's going to be beautiful. I'm working on a Flying Geese quilt (http://rie-quiltbee.blogspot.ca/search/label/Fly%20Away%20Home) and the geese are about 2 x 4 finished. There's tons of them but I'm lovin' how they are coming together and I'm certain that you will too – it's a great block.
Planning ahead? What is that? I do love notebooks and colored pencils so maybe will have to give this planning thing a go. Your quilt is going to be gorgeous!!
The quilt looks amazing and it's only on paper! Can't wait to see this one!
Love the idea for this! Sometimes it is nice to plan ahead a little more. I really look forward to seeing what you do with this!
Go ahead and be adventurous and use other fabric that you have, it will be even more exciting a plan. Looking forward to seeing it complete. Way to go that you also use
oh, this will be another absolutely gorgeous quilt, Jolene. Looking forward to seeing it in your chosen fabric.
It will be beautiful! good luck with planning, I am trying to plan more too.
How exciting – looks fab on paper, can't wait to see it in fabric!
Way to stick with your fabric diet! I think the best creations come when we use what we have on hand. Excited to see the progress! Kate
I follow a lot of blogs on bloglovin and whenever I see yours on the list I want to look at it first! I'm sure this will be just as fantastic as all your quilts. I can relate to diving into a quilt with not much planning as I'm impatient and want things finished fast, but I think a little planning can be a good thing. Can't wait to see the finished quilt 🙂
I too am trying to plan a bit prior to beginning! I love how a sketch can really "center" me before I begin… it also helps me use my treasured fabric more efficiently and effectively. Love your flying geese sketch, I look forward to seeing how it develops
Flying geese are always one of my favorite and your color plan is gorgeous! So much movement and the colors just scream HAPPY 🙂 Can't wait to see how it evolves.
Interesting idea! Good luck! Happy 2014!
Love the idea and love botanics!!
looks really great! The first idea that popped into my head was wallhanging! That would be fun.
Sounds like a fun project, those fabrics look gorgeous and at first I thought they were Botanics. I think that big flying geese would make a great quilt, I can't wait to see what you decide to do 🙂
beautiful plans. And well done for sticking to the fabric diet 🙂
Great idea!! 😀
Love this!! Great use of color!
Good for you for holding firm to Not Buying. I too made that commitment to myself with fabric and yarn until three-quarters of the stash is used or sold for real moneys !~! Your geese will be stunning. I am pulling fabrics too, trying to do a blue thing for Spring-I've pulled and put back a few times now…
