I’ve gotta say I’m just a bit excited with this one! I think it’s because I loved my original idea, and then as I was piecing and laying it out, and even after it was quilted, I fell out of love.
After I pulled it out of the dryer and hung it over the stair rail for a few days, I’m liking it again. My husband noticed it and commented that he liked it!
Here’s a post about my original idea. I started out with using color inspiration from the Botanics fabric collection, but using fabrics from my stash. I didn’t have any of this collection since I’ve been trying to use my stash!
Then a few weeks after I posted my idea, I received a mysterious parcel in the mail. I opened it to find a fat eighth bundle of Botanics!!! It was from Cindy at LiveAColorfulLife and she generously decided to share hers with me. I can hardly say how special that was!
At first I wasn’t sure if I would add the fat eighth bundle to my stack that I had sitting for this quilt. I decided I would, just mixing them in while keeping all my original fabric pull.
I used most of the fat eight bundle, together with my other fabrics, and I ended up with a quilt that’s 50″x63″ (after washing). I wouldn’t have wanted it any bigger because I was sick of sewing these flying geese units!
I also wrote another post asking for your advice on the layout of these blocks. Thanks for weighing in! After looking at it on my design wall for awhile, I decided to go with four geese the same in a row, instead of changing colors with each goose. I’m really happy with this, although I know the other way would have worked too.
Now for a bit of info:
My method for making these geese was like this tutorial, using Speed Piecing Method B. You’ll notice that it gives you the formula to make any size of flying geese. I wanted my geese 2″x4″, and those measurements are listed in the tutorial.
I found this method to work very well! My points ended up quite accurate without trying too hard:) And I’ll tell you my little secret: I didn’t trim those little corners! I hate trimming, although I know it makes for better accuracy and a neater looking back. But I skipped it, and my points still matched up ‘almost’ perfect!

I love this! I'm glad you decided to go with this layout. It kind of has an ongoing ombre effect. The punch of orange is also great. I need to make a baby quilt so maybe this would be a great one to try on a smaller scale. Thanks for sharing!!

This is just gorgeous! My part of the fat 1/8th set is still sitting in its original spot–on a shelf. I wish I could get some good idea of how to use it because I sure do love the fabric. Anyway, it makes me really happy to see this quilt. 🙂

I had a flying geese finish on Friday too! I have to tell you I saved your original sketch because it inspired me so much… in fact I'm working on pulling colours to make a geese quilt in these same hues (with Botanics as well), although I want my geese flying in all different directions. Your quilt is fabulous!

i've only made one quilt so far but this post and your finished product has inspired me to keep going, even if the perfectionist in me means that it takes months and months to do one. i just became a mother and i sort of love the idea of my children growing up watching me make quilts.
