This was a custom quilt that I made recently. I think this is the first quilt I can say I’ve made completely by hand! I did not use my sewing machine once for the entire quilt!
I used Hopewood Home’s Big Patch Quilt pattern as my guide for the size of the pieces. I wanted to include a few smaller patchwork pieces though, so the one square on the right side I made into a smaller patchwork piece.
To sew the top together I used this YouTube method by SpiritCloth called Paperless Paper Piecing. (This was a very enjoyable and amazingly fast method of piecing. I’ll definitely be doing it again!). Although I should add that I’m a fair bit more haphazard than the tutorial says. I sure didn’t make a template for those big squares. Accuracy isn’t that important in this pattern, so I just cut all the pieces the same as I would have if I were machine piecing it. Then I hand press approximately quarter inch down along the edge, instead of making a template. This worked very well for me, but if you’re a perfectionist, I can’t say for sure what extra steps you might want to take LOL.
I used my new favorite method of double gauze instead of batting. The backing is Linen Twill, bought from Blackbird Fabrics.
Here’s a couple photos to give you an idea how I did the binding, which is part of the backing wrapped around to the front. After it’s quilted, you trim the batting or double gauze to be right in line with the top. Then trim the backing in a straight line an inch away from the edge of the quilt top. Now you can tuck in the raw edge and top stitch it to the front in whatever way you like!

I love this quilt and commend you for your hand work. I have a lot of Japanese fabrics that I could use to make something similar that I’ve been saving for who-knows what. This, and the stitching on your quilt gives me some great ideas!

Your quilt reminds me of the Gees Bend quilts. Certainly because of the earthy colors you used. But also because of the corduroy fabric that I was able to discover. It’s a beautiful handicraft and you can see how much fun you had. Many greetings from Munich, Germany!

Nothing better than a hand project. Thank you for sharing the new technique of paperless epp. I love the option of seeing some stitches, especially when it’s a hand made piece ❤️
