i was going through old files today and realized i hadn’t shown you a few older quilts that i made. yes, they’re simple, but that doesn’t mean that i like them any less. not sure why i forgot about them. the one above sold almost right away, and the one below was a custom order, so maybe that’s why.
this bottom one follows the concept of a ‘jelly roll race’ quilt. Not sure what that is? just google it and you’ll find tutorials on it. it’s a very simple way of making a strip quilt. of course i changed a few things. i didn’t use actual jelly rolls (a roll of precut strips from Moda) but rather cut strips from my own yardage.
i think you can go pretty eclectic with your fabric choices on a pattern like this. it looks really good when it’s not too matchy matchy.
i also cut my strips wider than 2.5″, more like 3.5″or 4″. I also sewed the strips together straight rather than on the diagonal, just because I prefer that look.
All in all, a very quick and effective way to make a quilt!

I just love your work! Is that a horse fabric in the quilt? If so, can I ask what the brand/designer is if you remember? I'm so inspired when I read your posts! Thank you for sharing!
Jolene says
Thank you Therese! Yes, it is a horse fabric, but I'm so sad to say that it's out of print and quite hard to find. It's by Heather Ross, from a collection called West Hill.

Simple patchwork is a huge favorite of mine. And I love straight line quilting too. Both are beautiful, thanks for sharing!

These are so wonderful, Jolene! I have made several JRRQ but never used wider strips. I love the look and will be sure to try that next time. My last one was a total potpourri of a bunch of Halloween fabric I was trying to use up with accents of other colors. It was amazing how the fabrics all worked together. I highly recommend JRRQ for letting the fabric do what it will.

I love simple quilts and mainly lines and squares.

Love the 2nd quilt. Any idea what line of fabric the black with large flowers is?

It's Greenfield Hill by Denyse Schmidt. Isn't it gorgeous?

Both are beautiful! I just discover you and I will begin with a simple question. But believe me, your answer will help me :)! I use to prewash the fabric and the batting before quilting, but i am a beginner quilter and I am not sure it's ok. These two quilts are made with non prewashed fabrics and batting and after washing get to look like this? because I love them? And how should I wash a quilt? machine wash, hand wash? I admit there is more then one question here, I got carried away by curiosity 🙂
Thank you so much,
Dana

I'm happy to tell you how I wash my quilts, although there is no right or wrong way to do it. I do not prewash anything. When my quilt is completed I throw it in the washing machine for a regular cycle with warm water. Then I put it on low dry in my dryer. This makes it come out crinkly and soft. I wash my quilts regularly like this, just throw them in with my other loads of laundry.

Thank you so much Jolene for the answer. I kept some precut bundles of fabric to sew them without prewashing and i can't wait to do this and have your result 🙂 ! your quilts are amazing! such an inspiration to a beginner like me!
