my kids love this book by dr. suess. and i like reading it to them. mostly cause of this one page, which i’ve always adored for it’s colors.
this morning i decided to make a stack of fabric in these colors. the middle photo looks fun and happy, but i figured that a quilt made like this would benefit from a few of the darker and neutral colors which you don’t notice so much in the book illustration, but are a necessary part of it nonetheless. so i added a few tans, grays, and a couple of darker colors.
i’d love to make a quilt with these fabrics, but i guess we’ll see how far we can whittle down the must-do pile of other things first.
have you ever been inspired by the colors in your kid’s storybooks? we have a couple other story books from the ’60’s and ’70’s that have groovy colors too.
i totally have and i am going to use it as the inspiration for next round of the bee i am in. we are doing traveling quilts and this is the book that the quilt will be based on… it is lovely!

Awesome! I love piles of fabric and I love kids' books, so this post makes me very happy! I'll have to take a look through my daughters' books for some inspiration.
The page is so happy & so are the fabrics you're pulled. Great choice. It would make a serious pretty quilt. Gorgeous!
How great is it to be inspired by such a wonderful book! Love the fabrics you gathered together.
What a lovely pile of fabrics! I hope this gets moved to the top of the to do list.
I want to do a Caps For Sale quilt so bad. Have wanted to for months! Funny where color inspiration strikes! Love this post, love your fabric pull.
oh wow, those colors are so awesome! I'm starting to think about color more, I don't quilt as much, but it's a really important skill to have. You do it beautifully.
I love that you were inspired by such a fun book! I need to start looking at my kids' books in a whole new light now!
That is so cute! I love a couple books we have that are illustrated by Tom O'Sullivan – Corky's Hiccups and A Bag Full of Nothing. The drawings really strike my fancy but not that I thought of the palettes so much.
Well I don't have kids, but artwork is great for inspiration! What you picked out really does look amazing. I can see why you like picture and that color palette. Any ideas what you'd make with it?
Oh my gosh, what a great idea!! My kids are young adults but there are some favorite childhood books that I kept–I must go and look for some color inspiration there. In the end, your quilt will be a tangible memory of the happy times spent reading to your kids. LOVE it!
I love this idea, thanks so much for sharing! That fabric stack is absolutely beautiful, can't wait to see the quilt it turns into. Surely you can put a few things on hold and play with this straight away? 🙂
Fun to see the illustration in fabric. Great colors.
I have some of my mom's old children's books from the 50's and 60's. I have used them to decorate around the house, but never for this. I will definitely give this a try! Thanks so much for the inspiration!
Now that is an awesome colour scheme! Looking forward to seeing it : )
I love your inspiration. This color palette is beautiful! It is funny that now that I sew I am constantly seeing awesome color combinations in the most unexpected places. This is going to be a beautiful quilt.
I have! I have yet to follow through though. Soon hopefully. I have some coffee mugs from Anthropologie that keep calling at me to make quilts from the colors. 🙂
These colors are GREAT! Can't wait to see how they come together.

You are so good at color! That fabric stack will make a beautiful quilt and I can't wait to see what kind of blocks you make
Oh yes I have! And by the color scheme on a shopping bag, a fashion magazine, my daughter's wardrobe…it's endless.
I need to make a bee block in exactly these colours and am having trouble because my stash is way brighter. Thanks for posting this – it will really help me choose fabric! So pretty.
can't wait to see what you make, lovely range of colors.
Fantabulous idea!
What neat patterns and colors1 And the story book inspiration, what a neat idea!
How fun!!!! You managed to get the colors exactly right! This inspires me to find a book, story, or picture from my childhood to see if I can do similar…
I think that everything I make is inspired by the children's books that I get for the kids… but the books I get for the kids are strongly influenced by my aesthetic taste in the first place. Which came first?
I love the photo and the colors, btw.
My son brought this book back from the library just this week – I hadn't seen it before!
i love that you used a kids book to do a fabric pull. so charming!!!
What a fun post! Your set looks great – especially with the unicorn print on top. But, yes, the addition of the neutrals is wise. Very tempting fabric stack, I'm sure!
What a fun source of inspiration! I love how inspiration strikes in the neatest ways…
what a great idea!!
Super fantastic! My college had an amazing selection of vintage children's books, and the ones from the 70's had the most amazing colors.
I have never even though of that,,,it is brilliant. I love the colours……might need to raid the stash and the kids books. Thankyou
These photos and your fabric pull have knocked my socks off!!! So inspiring! Not only do I giant pink puffy heart love that fabric combo, but to see someone take a gorgeous illustration and turn it into quilty goodness is fantastic. Thank you so much for sharing!
I know this is an old post, but I was wondering what the fabric was with the unicorn on the green background. I'd love to get my hands on some! Thanks. Can't wait to see this quilt.
I hope you see this Alicia, as I'm not able to reply to you through email. That unicorn print is so sweet! Unfortunately it's out of print and kind of hard to find… It's by Heather Ross from the collection called Far Far Away. I hope you find some!
Thankyou!
