Last fall I won a bundle of Joel Dewberry’s Heirloom during Rachel’s Festival of Color. Now this collection would likely not have been a must-purchase for me, so it was neat to receive these fabrics that are slightly different from the usual ‘me’. I decided to make a quilt top from one of the colorways as a little challenge to work with these ‘not me’ colors and prints. Of course I added quite a few other prints and solids to the mix, because I find it hard to work with just one collection in a quilt.
This top sat unfinished for awhile, but in my big cleanup (which I’m a bit stalled on, I’ll admit) I finished this one up.
And yes, I know there is a tear in the corner of the sheet…
I think my favorite element in this quilt is the backing. I was saving this whimsical flannel for something special, but the colors were just right so I had to use it!
And of course the flannel makes this one extra snuggly which is great since it’s the perfect lap quilt size (57×70)
And here’s the whole thing. These kind of blocks are a lot of fun to make, so that was a good thing about this quilt. Looking at it now, I think I should have added even more solids… Live and learn though!

I fell in love with this line and I got enough yardage last year to make it into a quilt. I have it sewn up, and pinned, just need to find the time to quilt it! I didn't add any solids, and I used a modern plus design but I think the addition of some solids would have been a good idea!

Love the back! Works really well with all the prints you put together on the front. I love what you added to the colorway of Heirloom you used, I have a hard time using just one collection too, but I'm not always so good at mixing in other prints! It looks great! Great block choice too. So pretty!

someday maybe you can do a post on your process….do you plan your quilts from the beginning or just start cutting up fabric? Do you cut fabric for 1 block at a time or cut a bunch of fabric up and work with what you have cut? love your blocks!

I think it's really pretty. I can't imagine using flannel as a backing because here in Texas we're lucky to be able to use a quilt at all. It would be so nice to "need" a quilt!

It looks great! Sometimes we need try something not "us" in order to expand. You did a great job. I like all the different patterned fabric.

I like it just the way it is, Jolene…and wow, LOVE the fabric!

Gorgeous quilt. I agree, I normally wouldn't pick these fabrics but I am loving this quilt. What pattern did you use? And where in the world did you find the flannel bird fabric? I'm drooling! 🙂
