This quilt is a sample I made for a quilt-as-you-go class I taught at a local quilt shop. I think my favorite aspect of this method is that you can pair densely quilted blocks with a soft minky or flannel back and you have a wonderfully soft quilt!
I also chose to put it together with the sandwiching method rather than a traditional binding.
To finish a quilt this way, you simply cut the minky backing to the same size as the quilt top. Pin it right sides together, and sew it shut, just leaving a small opening to turn it right sides out. Top stitch all the way around the edge, about 3/8″ in.
Then quilt in the ditch between your 12″ blocks to secure the backing to the front. Voila! You’ve got a quilt with luscious textured quilting on the front, but on the back it’s all soft and squishy with minimal quilting!
BTW, it’s made with a jelly roll of Lucy’s Crab Shack by Sweetwater. I made the blocks 12.5″, and used about 2/3 of the jelly roll.

Very clever and simple. I've used the Minky for small projects but was unsure if it would sit well on a bigger piece. Obviously it does!

Cute cute! I was using Lucy's Crab Shack for the project I started in summer (5 inch blocks surrounded by crochet). Have pretty much decided to drop that project. I think I will use the layer cake for this instead…
I love your sandwich method idea. But I'm confused. If you were quilting as you went along, weren't you sewing the two layers together before you bound it? If so, how did you put the two fabrics right side together if they were already sewn together? Or maybe you didn't do the QAYG technique on this quilt? Sorry I'm not understanding this.
