In a sweet twist of irony, this king sized quilt has ended up on my daughter’s tiny toddler bed! I wanted it large enough to hang almost to the floor on a queen size bed, so I added that row of zigzags on the left hand side. And then one morning I came into my girlie’s room and found her cuddled up underneath this behemoth! She proclaims she loves it, and since it’s not needed elsewhere, it can stay there for now!
I used the Moda Modern Building Blocks pattern for this quilt. Honestly, I enjoyed every minute of putting these blocks together!
I cobbled together four pieces of voile that I had on hand for the back. I knew I was going to free motion quilt this one, and I’ve found that using voile on the back of quilts finished in this method accomplishes two things: it makes it extra drapey soft, and also makes it glide through your machine like butter. I was dreading quilting this thing, but I don’t think I even broke a sweat, because voile is just that much lighter and smoother than cotton.
If you’re apprehensive of voile, I dare you to try it! Hawthorne Threads has a huge selection of voiles, just go to their website and type ‘voile’ into the search box. Note: Lawn is basically identical to voile, but it seems that the lawns are all 45″ wide and the voiles are 56″. I like the extra width for those slightly bigger quilts.
So what else can I say about this quilt? That block in the second photo is my favorite. The block in the last photo has the tiniest pieces – the block is only 6 inches.
The whole thing finished feels a bit too sweet and girly for me. There’s just a lot of peachy pinks in there. It’s not going anywhere though, partly because I put so much time into it that nobody would ever want to pay the price I’d have to charge!

Wow, it's a stunner. So pretty! I'm not a girly girl, but quilts are the one place where I'm happy to go super feminine and flowery pink for some reason.
I'm dying to try voile backing. Does it need to be spray basted, or is pinning ok?
I always use pins. Maybe a few more than with cotton.

It's beautiful! The softer colours help the busy design to not be too loud. Good to read of your experience with using voile on the back, some people seem to have trouble with it being too slippery and causing puckers.
If you look at my second last photo, you will see a little pucker on the back. Ha! Yes, it can be a little slippery. I always try to pull the backing extra tight as I baste. I find it to be worth the extra bit of fiddliness though!

It really is a beauty. I agree about voile. I used it on the back of a linen quilt because it lightened the load. It is super cuddly too.

Congratulations, the finished product is beautiful! I think I've mentioned before, I have loved seeing this pattern done in prints. (And it's on my wishlist/to-do list, so it's good to hear it was enjoyable to make.)

Wow Jolene – this is amazing. I had only seen this with solids (reflecting the pattern) but I love how you've personalized it with patterned fabric and the asymmetrical band on the left. It's fantastic. I am not surprised that your daughter wanted to snuggle under it. It looks perfect for that.

This is so lovely, and I'll bet it's super soft with that voile on the back. I'm working on this pattern right now and just made a plan to enlarge it to king size. But after seeing your version I'm considering scrapping my plan and adding a zigzag border or something along those lines. Just gorgeous!!
