Did you think I was done with the Scrappy Trip Quilt Pattern? Nope, I’ll probably make one per year for the rest of my life. It’s just that good, in my opinion! This one was a quilt top hanging in the closet for a long time. And then I decided to send a few quilts to the long armer and this was one of the lucky ones that got sent! So here it is all bound up in my new favorite fabric (from the Warp and Weft Wovens by Ruby Star Society).
It’s a smallish lap quilt and backed with a combo of three fabrics that I adore as well. Nothing like a combo of text print, tiny floral, and a more graphic two color print!
I wanted the quilt to have four diamonds. But I also prefer rectangular to square quilts. If I made another set of diamonds on the top, it would have been reeeeeally tall and skinny. So instead I just added a row of rectangles on the top and bottom.
Here’s a link to the famous tutorial by Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville. And just a quick aside ,she’s got some great books and patterns! They’re usually in more traditional colors so young folks might overlook them, but there’s some good stuff there!
If you haven’t made this pattern, then please listen to my advice and go make the pattern once or twice exactly as it’s written in the tutorial. BUT, if you’ve made it before then keep reading to see how I made these rows of diamonds meet up in this way.
This pattern is so simple, but also if you want to have a specific row line up from block to block without it making a ‘square of four blocks’ in each corner then here’s what I did.
ALL the blocks should have ONE darker strip and the rest light.
Every other block though, should have the dark one be the row in the middle from corner to corner.
And then every OTHER block should be moved ONE over. So you should start the corner with a light strip next to the dark one.
In this way you should be able to make a diamond design like mine. I hope that makes sense! Like I said before, this quilt blocks is so simple, but trying to explain it makes it seem more complex than it is in real life!
This one will be available in my shop!

Awesome quilt…as always!
Love this pattern too and I like your idea of making one a year. Think I’m gonna do the same. You have been a big inspiration to lots of the quilts I make. Your style is simple and your mix of colors really appeal to me. Vintage Modern is what I consider it.
Keep up the good work,

Hello! I was truly filled with squeee when I saw your post. I think Bonnie should call her Scrappy Trips pattern “Scrappy Chips” because you can’t make just one. I love your color way, zinnias are one of summer’s gifts. Thank you for the beautiful inspiration.

Another beautiful trip quilt! I have made a few of these and could never work out how to line up the diamonds! Thank you for the tip. I can’t wait to make another one. Can I also ask do your blocks have 6 like the Bonnie Hunter tutorial or it looks like yours are 7? Does the amount of strips in each block make a difference? Thanks again. Love your quilts.

Would you consider posting a picture of how you lay out the strips for one block? They don’t even need to be sewn together. Or maybe a drawn picture of the color order to achieve the color pattern in your quilt? Only if you can find the time. Thank you.
