I wanted to use a piece of that adorable Heather Ross Princess and the Pea fabric. So I did a simple log cabin with the fabric colors pulled from that center piece.
I chose to tie this one with white cotton yarn which makes it so snuggly. Only one problem, I started tying from the center, making one every 4 inches. When I got to the outside rows, I was more like 5 – 6 inches, so the dilemma was; do I make another row right close to the edge? or just leave it empty? I left it empty, and now after washing, the edges are a bit bunchy. Guess I should have done that extra row all the way around.
It’s a lesson for next time, although it’s maddening because now what do I do with this little quilt? I don’t know if I can sell it!
Oh, by the way, the batting is 80/20 meaning that it’s 80% cotton and 20% poly. Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth between this stuff and the 100% cotton. Basically they’re very similiar. I think this 80/20 has just a tiny bit more puffy softness to it, which I like.
In the end, I think it’s my first choice for baby quilts, or any bed quilts. Wallhangings, and tablecloths are better off with 100% cotton.

It is gorgeous!! I have a little bit of Heather Ross and wasn't sure what to do with it, I may use this as inspiration if that's ok?!
You could hand quilt around the edge if the bunchiness is bothering you?
Jolene says
Of course you can make a similiar quilt! Thanks for the suggestion, I was thinking maybe I should try tying another row now yet and see if it could be fixed.

I love this quilt (the slight bunchiness doesn't bother me at all, by the way). I have a great love of HR fabrics so I of course love the way you put together this quilt, but my favorite part has to be the single pieced star. It adds that extra "something" to the quilt.

Wow you've been busy lately! Yay! This turned out adorable! I think you should try to sell it anyway, just let the buyer know up front. There is something so snuggly soft about it, and the quirkiness just adds to it in my opinion! :). Curious why you think 100% cotton should be left to wall hangings or table runners and not beds? Because of the poofy?
Jolene says
I phrased that sentence wrong! Cotton is definitely great for bed and baby quilts as well. What I meant was that I would NOT use the 80/20 for wall hangings and tablecloths.
Rachel at Stitched in Color says
Yep, definitely still list it. It's delightful. Love that little star!
Flo @ Butterfly Quilting says
Very cute! I love the stripy binding.
And you know, people buying this, will buy what they see…bunchy and all. That does look like a very cuddly quilt!
Rachel says
The great thing about hand tying a quilt is that it's not too late to still add that extra row! It'll work out.

Adorable way to use your princess and the pea fabric.
Annie says
What an adorable quilt! And I just love that alphabet fabric! Do you know the name of it?
Jolene says
It's from the Girl Friday collection by Cosmo Cricket. It's an older collection so I'm not sure if it's still available though…
Svetlana says
oh, I love the addition of that star in one of the strips, what a fantastic idea. It looks gorgeous.
Carla says
It looks very soft and snugly . Was your inspiration from the book Quilt Love? I really like the simplicity of it.
Jolene says
I actually hadn't thought of that, but it does kind of have that look… I'm subconsciously inspired by some of my favorite book all the time though!
Gina says
so cute!! I love the colors and the little star in there 🙂
Erica says
This is adorable. I have a little bit of that print that I bought from Spoonflower a while back but I'm afraid to use it. I think the quilt looks great, I wouldn't worry about a little bit of bunchiness.
Phyllis says
I would keep it, it is so lovely, cuddly and sunny! Such a happy quilt. And that bright, yellow star in there, I love it!
Hannapat says
Will make a great picnic quilt if you don't want to sell it. Lovely xo
Christine says
It is beautiful.
Tessa @ TheSewingChick says
I think it is just darling, scrunchy edges and all. I love the little yellow star, something extra that is typical of your wonderful creative style! Thanks for your thoughts on cotton batting vs 80/20. I go back and forth myself and always wonder which is better!
Deb Cox says
Oh it's so lovely. The colours, the scrunchiness, the log cabin(ness). Perfect the way it is. Sigh!
Qltr89 says
I like simple quilts too! And, your log cabin quilt looks cute. I am partial to warm and natural batting, but I use poly batting in the quilts of our furbabies.
Heidi Staples says
Absolutely lovely — the colors are so soft and warm!
pandchintz says
It's very cute! Love that print.
Jezibels says
I believe all baby quilts should be tied, for softness and lovability! Love your quilt! Great job!
Franziska says
That's a lesson I often learn: be to lazy to do another step and you'll regret it… That doesn't mean that I learned from the lesson… 😉
I think you can still sell the quilt but that's only my personal opinion.
Martha says
I think it is beautiful! I love the little star. I think you can sell it. It is a lovely quilt.
Thank you for your tips on batting. I have never tried 80/20. Now I'm curious.
Katherine says
Time and again, you create the most beautiful quilts, Jolene. This quilt is certain to make a little princess feel very loved.
If you're really unhappy with the bunchiness, can you just add another row of ties? I think its beautiful and it will sell – no matter whether you add more ties or leave it as is.
Jolene says
Thank you friends, for your suggestions. I think I will add another row and list it in my shop.
