I wanted to use a piece of that adorable Heather Ross Princess and the Pea fabric. So I did a simple log cabin with the fabric colors pulled from that center piece.
I chose to tie this one with white cotton yarn which makes it so snuggly. Only one problem, I started tying from the center, making one every 4 inches. When I got to the outside rows, I was more like 5 – 6 inches, so the dilemma was; do I make another row right close to the edge? or just leave it empty? I left it empty, and now after washing, the edges are a bit bunchy. Guess I should have done that extra row all the way around.
It’s a lesson for next time, although it’s maddening because now what do I do with this little quilt? I don’t know if I can sell it!
Oh, by the way, the batting is 80/20 meaning that it’s 80% cotton and 20% poly. Over the years, I’ve gone back and forth between this stuff and the 100% cotton. Basically they’re very similiar. I think this 80/20 has just a tiny bit more puffy softness to it, which I like.
In the end, I think it’s my first choice for baby quilts, or any bed quilts. Wallhangings, and tablecloths are better off with 100% cotton.

You could hand quilt around the edge if the bunchiness is bothering you?

I love this quilt (the slight bunchiness doesn't bother me at all, by the way). I have a great love of HR fabrics so I of course love the way you put together this quilt, but my favorite part has to be the single pieced star. It adds that extra "something" to the quilt.
Wow you've been busy lately! Yay! This turned out adorable! I think you should try to sell it anyway, just let the buyer know up front. There is something so snuggly soft about it, and the quirkiness just adds to it in my opinion! :). Curious why you think 100% cotton should be left to wall hangings or table runners and not beds? Because of the poofy?
I phrased that sentence wrong! Cotton is definitely great for bed and baby quilts as well. What I meant was that I would NOT use the 80/20 for wall hangings and tablecloths.

The great thing about hand tying a quilt is that it's not too late to still add that extra row! It'll work out.

This is adorable. I have a little bit of that print that I bought from Spoonflower a while back but I'm afraid to use it. I think the quilt looks great, I wouldn't worry about a little bit of bunchiness.

I like simple quilts too! And, your log cabin quilt looks cute. I am partial to warm and natural batting, but I use poly batting in the quilts of our furbabies.

That's a lesson I often learn: be to lazy to do another step and you'll regret it… That doesn't mean that I learned from the lesson… 😉

If you're really unhappy with the bunchiness, can you just add another row of ties? I think its beautiful and it will sell – no matter whether you add more ties or leave it as is.
