This blog post is just my need to get a list written down to clear my head:) Therefore you may find it very boring! If that’s the case, you can head over to Adrianne’s blog On the Windy Side. She asked me a bunch of thought provoking questions and I blathered away about all things quilty and non quilty. She’s making this a series, so check out the other quilter’s responses while you’re there. I always love a good interview!
ON to the LIST!!!
Ideally, this would have been typed out and posted on January 1st. But, ‘Better Late than Never’ is my mantra, so here goes!
This list will be divided into two parts. Part 1 is quilts that must be completed before the end of August. We’re adding a new baby to our family then, so there’s a few projects that simply must. be. done. by that time.
Part 2 is an ongoing list that always resides in a tiny corner of my brain. This list is not always on instant recall, so I decided I’d ease my mind by writing it down. It’s a list of all the quilt patterns or ideas that you could call a bucket list. Those quilt designs that I ‘know’ I want to make someday.
First of all Part 1.
*A quilt for the baby. I’ve been thinking about this one for awhile. Kinda feels like it should be an epic quilt, right? But that’s a lot of pressure. So maybe we’re just gonna go with a heart quilt which you can see that I’ve been dabbling with above. (this may change yet!)
*A quilt for my 6-year-old son. He will not give up his old blanket that I made him years ago, but it’s too small to cover his bed nicely, and since the new baby will share his room, I want to freshen up the room a bit. I don’t have any final decisions made yet on color or design. My original idea was to use all the blues, kinda like that heart above, but just random patchwork. Then yesterday I made the mistake of asking his opinion:) He of course wants “all the bright colors, maybe rainbows, and then in the middle could you do a boy and a truck?” hmmm…. as you can see, we’ll be doing some more thinking on this one!
*Finish this pixel heart quilt. The top is done, it just needs to be quilted. This one is a gift, and it’s just waited far too long. I suddenly had the idea of getting it long arm quilted so any of you know of a long arm quilter in the Calgary area that you’d recommend?
Part 2
Here’s the list of quilts I want to make some time in the next 5 years! They’re not listed in any special order of importance, just jotting them down as they come to me.
*Ikat Quilt by Stitched in Color. I adore this quilt. I want Rachel’s exact quilt, but since that’s not happening, I’ve already got the pattern and made one block to try it out. (see above) I’m not completely decided on a color scheme, but I think it will include lots of golds and warm pinks and reds. I’ll talk more about this pattern in the future, obviously.
*Gathering Flowers Quilt by Anna Maria Horner. I bought this pattern over a year ago, and seeing some beautiful versions pop up since then has only cemented my resolve.
*Owl Quilt the one on the cover of Dare to Be Square quilt book. I just love this pattern. Don’t know why I haven’t made two or three of these already
*Kaleidoscope Quilt – I have templates for a 6″ finished block. I tried one block, (above) and realized that this will be a looong term project. Those little pieces are fiddly! I’ll also need to do more studying to decide on color and value placement since I really want those big circles to show up as the secondary design. Here’s an example.
Little Leaves Quilt – from Elizabeth Hartman’s first quilting book. Here’s an example of this pattern.
Ok, I’m stopping there for now! I know there’s more, but this is maybe the main list that’s been unchanging for a long time. Now I can refer back to this post when I’m stumped on what to make next…Hahaha.
Congratulations on your expectant status. I'm assuming you are going to be having another boy. Also, best wishes in your quilting plans. You son sounds like he gets quilt inspiration from the same place as my four-year old does.

I have a quilty bucket list too but unfortunately mine will stay largely unaccomplished! I wish I had your speed and dedication to see a project thru…

Loved the ikat combo, and the Kaleidoscope is an ambitious one, I didn't know where to start with colors to obtain that effect, but if anyone could, I know is you 😉
Congratulations on your new addition, how exciting! I loved your first heart quilt, so cant wait to see this one. I have such a large and unrealistic quilty bucket list. I cant wait to see all of your projects come to life.

Congratulations with your new baby! That's wonderful news. I read your interview and enjoyed it. It was very 'you'.
About the kaleidoscope pattern, I made a quilt like that years ago for my bil. I blogged about it a long time ago with awful pictures (http://applepiepatchwork.wordpress.com/2012/06/04/past-projects/). I remember that the trick to getting the circles to really stand out is to make sure that you use the lightest fabrics on the little triangle corners of each block. I hope yours turns out the way you want it to!

Hey Jolene – you were a delight to interview so thank you so much! How exciting to be adding to your family so soon – congratulations! Your quilty bucket list is so great – there are lots of my faves in there. Have you seen the Reindeer quilt in that Dare to be Square book? That's on my quilty bucket list – in fact I just bought a FQ bundle of solids with a lot of brown in it so perhaps now is the time!
How wonderful to be expecting a new baby. Your summer will be wonderful! Looking forward to seeing some teeny tiny toes : )

Congratulations! I read your interview on Adrianne's blog and so agree with you about journaling your quilts. I give away most of my quilts so I like to blog about them before I give them away. This way I can write down my thoughts on the quilt while they are still fresh in my mind.
Another baby is so exciting. Congratulations. Loved your interview with Adrianne. Love your blog and your quilts. I'm like you in that I would maybe like to join some sort of quilting group but I do keep to myself a bit and it would be stepping out of my comfort zone. The thing is my five babies are pretty grown now (my youngest is 12 ) so I am trying to do just that so maybe one day 🙂 I enrolled for a free motion one day workshop next month so very nervous. What the h.. you only live once. 🙂

A year or 2 ago (by now) my son was all into rainbows – everything he colored had a rainbow.
Have fun designing a quilt for your son! My daughters and I are having fun making a scrappy quilt from their own stashes they acquired growing up (somehow whenever mom bought fabric, they both needed a fat quarter of their own!) — the pinks and purples are not quilt their favorites anymore, but they are going to make a charming quilt.

I, too, love Rachel's ikat quilt. It seems to be pretty time-intensive, though. Did the block you do require a big time commitment? Also: I asked my five-year-old son the same question about a quilt for him and got the same response. Why pick a few colors when you can have all of them?! The result: a boyish rainbow quilt. : )
Hmmm… I'm guessing that the one block I made took my a good hour from start to finish. These are big blocks! Kinda reminds me of making a Swoon quilt. Feels like the blocks are taking forever to make, but then Boom! you've got a quilt top.
A new baby in August, hurray! I am honored to find my quilt on your list. =) I need to make my 7 year old son a new bed quilt and have no idea what I'll do. Good to know that I run series risks asking for his input 😉 Kidding, of course I will.
I love that IKAT quilt too but it looks daunting! Love your list and how you put fabrics together – looking forward to seeing them in progress!
I'm quite late to this, but I'd like to say that if you don't mind paper piecing, do the kaleidoscope as a paper pieced block. Quilter's Cache has the templates available. You can also use a lot of charm squares cut in half diagonally for the wedges that way. It is still a lot of work, but it isn't nearly as fiddly.
I can imagine you would make a wonderful "owl" quilt…. Can't wait to see one…
