Well this quilt was an unexpected little detour for me! I decided to clean up my sewing room closet and came across a plastic tub full of skinny strips. At some point I was saving them for a project for my daughter. It was a fabric garland where you would tie these tiny strips on a long string. So they were mostly all 1.5″ or narrower! My first thought was to just throw them away as any sane person would do. But then I looked closer at all those bits of favourite fabrics. A lot of them will have been the last little strip off of pieces that were used up, so a lot of them are prints that I no longer have.
I decided to make a spiderweb quilt with them and had so much fun making these blocks because these fabrics were mostly all beloved prints that I got a chance to work with this one more time! I quickly decided on this yellow and strawberry fabrics for the background.
I know there are different methods for making a spiderweb quilt but I again used Camille Roskelley of Thimbleblossoms pattern which uses a template. I’ve used it quite a few times already and it continues to be just right for me. https://thimbleblossoms.com/collections/pdf-patterns/products/daydream-pdf-pattern. I should explain a little more how I use this pattern… wish I had taken a photo as that would have been worth a lot of words. I made strip sets that were tall enough for the template and worked with the varying lengths of strips I was working with. then I’d press these nice and flat and cut out as many of the template shapes as I could from one strip set. This makes it a lot faster than trying to make each one individually. Hopefully that makes sense!
It ended up being about 60″ square and I completely used up my strips except for a couple pieces that failed to make the cut. For the backing I used a combo of a vintage brushed cotton with big pink and red roses together with a Ruby Star Society typewriter print. You can tell how much I like this quilt because I used these two special fabrics on the back!

As usual, I love this! I’ve never attempted a spider web quilt yet. This will be my inspiration for doing one this winter. 😊

What a great quilt! Did you hand piece? That is my go to with template quilts.

Jolene, I’m loving that you are posting again. It’s been wonderful to check in and read your work and see your creations again.
What a great idea to make the strip sets first and then cut the template shape!

Jolene, I’m trying to decide which method I’d like to try before I buy a pattern. Could you tell me if this pattern uses paper or fabric foundation, or none at all? Is the template one you make at home or do I need to purchase one? I looked at the pattern link, but it doesn’t say the method of piecing or if the template needs to be purchased. Thanks!
I always enjoy your posts!

Hi! This method does not use a foundation. It uses a template, which the pattern just has the paper template which is all I’ve used but you could make your own sturdier template.
