(an old quilt i found which i adore…that orange back and binding…but which needs a bit of work. someone had the brilliant idea to use it as a tree skirt and hacked a big hole in the middle)
well, really that quilt is just filler right now, cause i don’t have a lot to show you at the moment. yes, i’m painting! and working on getting my sewing room all gussied up. thanks so much to each one of you for giving me your thoughts and advice on my sewing room quandary. (seriously, you should go read the comments on the last post, there’s some great ideas there!)
it was great to hear about how you folks have worked with your own homes to make a sewing room work for you. i know that a lot of you may have smaller homes than i do!
quite a few advised me to stay in my dining room. oh, i so agree. only problem being that i’m a messy person who hates mess. so i’m unhappy when my house is a mess, but i leave messes around me everywhere. and i tend to be a collector. no, not a hoarder, a collector:)
so i’ve decided to move to the basement. and yes, I will bring my machine up and sew upstairs sometimes. when i’m quilting a large quilt, or working one one big project, it’s worth my time to haul my stuff upstairs.
and yes, your advice to paint? of course! i’m known to use a fresh coat of paint as a solution to any problem, which isn’t always a good thing, my husband would tell you. but this time, i had told myself that it wasn’t worth the time it would take, i should rather be spending that time finishing up quilting stuff, rather than making my sewing room pretty.
but you cheered me on, so i’m painting! and i chose to switch my basement rooms around so my former guest room will now be my sewing room. it’s bigger, and it has a concrete floor, so i can paint it a funky color!
so hopefully i’ll be back to regular quilting stuff in a few days!
and about that Value Quiltalong? Yes, it’s happening, but i was getting a bit ahead of myself. It’s coming at the end of October…
i saw a pin on pinterest the other day that said, cleaning your house with children home is like eating an oreo while brushing your teeth. 😉 i am embracing the mess for now but so excited that you are going to have a spot in your basement to sew!
I completely know what you mean about being a messy person who hates messes. I always say I'm someone who values organization, but I'm sure anyone who visits my house on a regular basis would say, "Um, WHAT??" Glad you are painting. Nice fresh paint is always a treat. Looking forward to the sewing room "reveal"!
How exciting! I just recently renovated my craft room and it was so worth the work. Can't wait to see pics of what you come up with. 🙂

Really enjoyed reading about your quandary and everybody's comments…I am in the exact same boat and have decided as well to keep the sewing room downstairs purely because it drives me crazy not to be able to clean up…however, my basement is unfinished so I can't even paint (well I guess I could paint the studs?) Can't wait to see what you come up with! I LOVE a beautiful organized space just as much as I love a quilt.
I have a similar dilemma. Unless the basement is one of those awesome re dos on HGTV I wouldn't touch mine with a 10 foot pole LOL !! My problem is my sewing room is upstairs in one of the empty rooms. We are empty nesters of one son with 2 grand babies. We rarely have anyone over . Mostly it is the grand babies. So I* only need to worry about dangers for the 4 yr old. and 1 yr old. My problem is we have one TV downstairs in our living room and nothing upstairs, no computer either. I feel lonely during the day all by myself upstairs with no TV to keep me co. or laptop for that matter. So I don't know if I should move into my dining room so I can have access to the tv and laptop . My sewing room is so nice and full but it feels untouchable , like one of those living room couches with plastic covers. I get no inspiration whatsover to go sew..

I like everything to be organized but believe me, when I'm creating things there's nothing organized about the mess I make…unless you count the fact that I generally know where I put things… :)I can't wait to see/hear what you come up with!
If you're going to paint the concrete floor in your sewing room, may I recommend, chalkboard paint? A few years back we ripped the carpet out of our house but took some time to put in new flooring. In the meantime I painted my daughter's floor in her room with chalkboard paint. It was so much fun for both of us. Now that we've had proper floors for a few years she still laments that we covered up her chalkboard floor. It'll keep the kids busy so maybe you can sew :-).
Sounds like a brilliant solution! Paint those walls a happy color and enjoy your "new" sewing room and your clean dining room!!
My sewing is in the basement too. I like having a space that is just mine. I can arrange and decorate as I please and leave it as messy as it needs to be. MY dilemma is lighting also. A basement makes for bad pictures. However, I always take finished quilts outdoors for a photo shoot. For small projects I built myself a lightbox. It works wonders!
Will try daylight bulbs as suggested by some of your readers.
As for having the option to sew upstairs, maybe you could consider a second machine. If you use one just for piecing, it doesn't have to be a fancy one. Just a thought…
I'm a little jealous that you can keep your mess out of sight somewhere! I have a wall in my laundry room which is currently totally wrecked. I keep telling myself as soon as I get home from this up coming weekend, I am going to deep clean my house. And organize my fabric. I'm terrified to even think about it!
