If there’s one thing I HAVEN’T been doing much of the last few months, it’s quilting! Which means I have a massive backlog of quilt ideas in my head.
But suddenly I’m on a roll to finish up all unfinished quilts before I start anything new. We’ll see how long that resolve lasts, but I’m gonna try!
And I’m trying not to buy ANY new fabric either! Now that’s a tough one.
So here’s one that I just finished up and added to my Etsy shop. Simple squares of Anna Maria Horner fabric (9 inch squares I think) and I did a combo of flannel backing and tying rather than quilting. I also did a sandwich method rather than binding which completes the super-softness and makes this more a blanket than quilt.
It’s very simple to finish a quilt this way, just make sure your top, batting and backing are all the same size. Then layer them right sides together, and pin around the edges. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening to turn the quilt right side out. Finally hand sew the opening shut and you’re done!
I would love to try this method of quilting as I hate binding! I just worry that without the machine quilting that the piecing would come apart at the seams.
binding isn't my favorite! i wish i liked it better. i love simple patchwork though. it is always so pretty!

I love your quilts, all so different and all so beautiful. I have some large scale prints by Anna Maria, Valori Wells, and Patricia Bravo that I would love to use together to make a "big" squares patchwork like this one of yours. I have two questions: what did you use to tie your quilt, and did you prewash the flannel backing? Or do you prewash all your fabric? I don't prewash, but noticed that with one quilt I did using Kona cotton for the backing, that the backing didn't shrink as much as the quilt top and Warm & White batting. It was okay, but the back became sort of baggy, if that makes sense, after washing and drying. Also, I've had poor results tying with embroidery thread, no matter how I tied them most of the ties came loose after a few washings. Yarn doesn't always look so great, so just wondering.
