Yay! My first quilt from Simply Retro book is complete! I’ve made an unspoken rule for myself as I work my way through this book. I have to finish each quilt completely before I start another one. Having a bunch of unfinished tops in a pile is not going to help me feel good about spending time in my sewing room. Also, I can’t start the next one till I’ve cleaned all the scraps and stacks of extra fabric off my cutting table.
After all, there’s nothing that feels as good as starting a new project with a clean empty table!
Now about this quilt. It’s the second one in the book, called “Retro.” It’s 60″x72″ and as you can tell by the last photo which is the book version, I really changed things up.
This was one of my least favorite quilts in the book, but I suddenly had a ‘vision’ of all those triangle pieces in yellow prints, kind of like butterflies. Then as I started cutting, I decided to make the squares into rainbow rows.
I used Kona Snow as my background, which is probably my least favorite part of the quilt since I’ve started using more busy fabrics as my background lately.
I really like the back, as I was able to use some fun prints and a rainbow strip.
Now I can’t wait to start the next one!
It’s a beautiful quilt, I love what you have changed in the use of fabrics and colours. Good luck with the next one!
Beautiful quilt! Now I feel like I need this book but I'm going to try and resist. I like the idea of making every quilt in a book I might try that with one I have.
Somehow it looks wavy. I dom't know the book, but when you talked about it, It seemed a traditional quilts book, and don't know how was the example in the book but yours doesn't look traditional at all. Love it!
Love your interpretation!
Greetings from Guarulhos, Brazil!
Beautiful artwork! So colorful and cheerful!
You are right, it is important to conclude a piece before starting another.
I just finished to assemble a quilt last week and I felt so victorious!!
I love your blog, it is so inspiring.
Thanks for sharing.
This quilt says, "Oh Happy Day! Let's snuggle up and read a book together!" And I think the Snow allows the other fabrics to sing.

I really love what you did with it. Now I want to make this quilt!!
SO pretty!!!
Well, you certainly knocked that out of the ball park ! I knew about your project and have the book but when I opened your post I said " wait, what? that's not in the book ! " You have truly made it your own – love it.

Wow! That didn't take you long. It looks great and I bet you used up lots of scraps ; )
I love your scrappy version of this quilt!
It's always amazing how much color and fabric choices can change a quilt. I think your version could easily replace the version in the book. Love the colors and can't wait to see your next one!
I like the changes you made. The original screams razor blades, I think.
This is beautiful, and I like the cohesiveness of the yellow in the HSTs. And I hadn't seen the razor blades until the comment above, but just wow. Hilarious. I'm definitely going with your scrappy version. Are you willing to share which one you're going to do next?
I love it! The design changes you made are perfect!
Kites and butterflies… Summer days at the park! Love it! I still haven't got my hands on that book but I'm looking for an excuse to buy it 🙂
oooo… I totally saw butterflies when the picture first popped up, even before I read your text. It's impressive to see just how different the quilt can look… yours looks totally different – both are pretty awesome.
I love the changes you made! I love the colors more than the original, awesome job! And I like the idea of cleaning up the scraps and the table before embarking on the next project, I need to remember that!
This quilt is also my least favourite in the book and yet I love what you did with it! Just goes to show what a little sweet fabric will do!
LOVE that you are working through this book and I REALLY need to follow your method of finishing one before starting another – I too love starting a quilt in a neat sewing room. Thanks for all the inspiration.
Oh, I love your quilt, both front and back. And I wish I was anywhere near as disciplined as you are.
Beautiful quilt. I love the changes you made.
Your version is beautiful! such fun summer colors.
Hooray for your first finish from the book! It is a wonderful quilt.

Oh my gosh! I love what you did with that pattern! I continue to learn wonderful skills, designs, color choices from you beautiful blogging quilters. Thank you so much!
I have this book, and I would have never guessed in a million years that it is the same quilt pattern. Really lovely take on the original and I love the colors!
I think the Kona Snow makes it all fresh and Summery… It looks like you had fun making this quilt…
This looks really awesome! I love how different it looks from the one in the book.
Gorgeous quilt!!!
This was one of my least favourites from the book too – I say WAS because I love the colourful version you've made! Love, love, love the backing!
A couple of days ago I was thinking about your challenge and hoping to see something soon. It is so fun to see this quilt so scrappy. I look forward to seeing your next creation.
Love your yellow butterflies. That was fast! Maybe you'll make it through this book in 2015! I just started cutting out Sweet Life – already changing up some of my fabric choices – right now I've got a mix of Amy butler, 1 canoe 2, and Tula Pink. Can't figure out what I want to do with the sashing/ cornerstones yet. Sometimes I can't see it until I get to that step. What's next for you?
I'm late in the game in voting, but I really hoped you would choose to do Camille's Simply Retro book!! I love, love, love Sunday Morning Quilts, but I was eager to see your spin on Camille's designs. Thanks so much for doing this, and thanks for allowing us to follow along. It's great inspiration for each one of us as we seek to create our own works of art! Blessings to you!!
PS – love the little hands holding the quilt too. 🙂
This is exactly why I wanted you to work through this book! I love how you changed it. It looks great!
I love your version! It's just like I would imagine making it too. So scrappy and fun.
I tried for the first time to make a quilt until it was finished. I found it boring and eventually moved on. The only good thing was that I didn't have to change the thread in the machine for a long time!
Your quilt is lovely BTW.
Your changes are perfect. Your quilt is says summer and retro.
It is truly mind boggling how the final look of the quilt changed so dramatically by the choice of your colors. It's fantastic!
it's a beauty!!
Love love love the colors!
I really love your quilt and the colors that you used.
Great quilt. Love the quilt and the colors.
