This quilt was directly inspired by a painting that hang above my stove. If you’re not aware of Lore Pemberton’s art, you should go check it out. She features a lot of quilts in her paintings. You can see the quilt that I used as inspiration in the photo of the painting. I figured out the pattern and then tried to use the exact same colors. I admit these colors are not quite my usual, but it was so fun to try and make it look just like the painting.
The corner blocks were applique shapes and I decided to do raw edge applique. This is quick and easy and give a primitive look. I just drew up super simple shapes, it’s amazing how rudimentary one’s drawing skills can seem but it totally works in this type of quilt.
Originally my plan was to include this as the main pattern in my next book. I even made another version of it, which is finished as well. I was working on my third version after much hair pulling with lack of inspiration and issues with my overall vision for this next book. Suddenly I realized that although I had enjoyed making this quilt and had the basic instruction all written up, it just wasn’t the right quilt for my book.
Even though I had already put so many hours into it, I decided to completely head in a different direction. Immediately I knew it was the right decision as I’m already brimming with other plans.
So…. I’m curious what your impressions are of this quilt? I think it’s neat, and I loved the idea of it being inspired by a piece of beautiful art. In the end though, I found it missing that essential ingredient that I must have when making a quilt. I’m not talking about the finished quilt, which is a great design. It was the process of making it which I disliked immensely. Working with such a large bossy center medallion, and then those corner pieces, well it was a challenge to make it all work together without LOTS of planning ahead. And while some people do that well, it’s not how I enjoy making quilts. And in my books, I’ve vowed that I will stay true to my real quilting self and not just make the newest or shiniest thing. I will promote the ways and methods that I prefer because what’s the point otherwise?
If there was enough interest I have toyed with the idea of making a pdf pattern for this quilt and selling it on Etsy. I don’t know… I’d love your feedback if it’s something you would purchase. Pattern writing is not my first love but I’ve got all the basics figured out for this one already…. My plan was to show different ways to make this quilt without applique as well. You could use pillow panels as I did in my other example, or vintage embroidery pieces etc.
That means that this quilt which was finished at least 1.5 years ago is now here on the blog. It’s also available in my Etsy shop, together with the other quilt I made in this same pattern. I’ll blog about that one soon, just didn’t want to put that many photos in one post.

I think the quilt is beautiful and would be interested in a pattern!
Such a beautiful quilt – I would definitely buy the pattern
I think the quilt is terrific. I liked seeing the close-ups in the four corners. The thread “painting” is such a neat detail. I find your work and colors you use quite interesting.
Beautiful….I would be interested in the pattern
It’s interesting what is learned through the process of making a quilt that isn’t our usual style. This is a delightful quilt. The fabrics chosen, the quilting with those little flowers dancing throughout, and the texture! I just like to look at it! Thnnks for sharing your thoughts on the making of it, too.
Such a lovely quilt…..creating a pattern would be wonderful.
Beautiful interpretation of the painting.
I definitely would buy the pattern. I think it’s lovely and your use of color is so unique. Your quilts are inspiring.
I would definitely buy a quilt pattern of yours. Your quilts are lovely and seem to evoke a sense of “home “.
I love your blog. And I LOVE this quilt! The texture is simply wonderful. Your fabric choices, your thread art, the raw-edge appliqué and the quilting over it! — it’s wonderful. I think making a PDF pattern would be a good idea. I’d certainly consider purchasing it. Thank for the close-ups that I could enjoy in more detail and for sharing your process and thinking. I get so inspired by your quilts and have made several versions of them myself. Thank you!
This quilt is so beautiful! You must have spent a lot of time on this quilt. But it was well worth it. I would love to try and make one. Please sell a PDF pattern for it.
This quilt is so beautiful! As a quilter, I know you spent many hours spent on it. I would be very interested in a PDF pattern.
Refreshing, a beautiful delight to behold. So very different from all the quilts out there. Great job, definitely a keepsake, but to be used and enjoyed, love it!
I love ALL of your quilts, but I have to admit…currently it is my new favorite! Love the primitiveness of it especially!
I would DEFINITELY be interested in a PDF pattern. Have a fabulous weekend!
I must make this quilt! I love the idea of little bits of raw edge appliqué added in a quilt and little squares always get me. Can’t wait to see your other versions!
I love the quilt. The color palette is perfect. The colors are calming which is perfect for a busy pattern. The quilting is exquisite and really adds a richness to the quilt. This really is a show quilt. I would be hesitant to use and wash too much out of fear of the raw edges wearing away. I would love it too much.
Beautiful Quilt !! Please do a pattern , would love to make it. and what a great inspiration from another art piece.
Happy Labor Day to you and yours! Blessings
I love this quilt! I would definitely buy, if available. The colors are perfect!
I like the quilt but am not crazy about raw edge applique. Probably because I mostly sew by hand and it would likely unravel with washing. I think that having some creative input is essential to quilting for me. I don’t buy patterns, since I can look at something and decide which parts to keep and which to forgo. Also, very fussy piecing is not really fun. Life it too short to do things that aren’t fun when it comes to your leisure time.
This quilt Definitely has vibe in my opinion. I wonder if more of Lore Pembertons recreated would have the same effect ? I love it.
As far as buying a pattern, I like simplicity in quilting as I’m very much a beginner.
I would totally by a pattern PDF for this quilt! I love it!
I just really liked your quilt. yes. I would purchase it.
I love this quilt…the inspiration, the applique and the colours you used. Yes, please make a PDF for us!
I love this quilt! You did such a good job of duplicating the quilt in the picture. I am now obsessed with that print! I think I need one for my house. I would love a pdf of the pattern too.
Such a beautiful piece of work, Just love this quilt. A pattern would be wonderful.
I would love to buy the pattern, it’s a beautiful quilt.
Ummm…..yes!!!! If you make a pdf I will purchase it. I love this type of quilt and have not made one yet.
Lovely quilt! I wonder if the artist of painting used a real quilt as inspiration?
I would not buy the pattern. I rarely follow a pattern when making a quilt. I just build them as I go 🙂
I would be interested in a pattern. I’d like to try my hand at a medallion quilt and some applique work. Also see a little bit of Janet Clare’s design sensibility in this piece!
Definitely would be interested in purchasing this pattern.
