The star quilt top for my son is complete! It needs a good pressing yet, but it’s going to be set on the shelf till the backing arrives so I’ll wait with that. Thanks so much for all of you that weighed in on the minky backing debate! I don’t know why I hadn’t considered flannel as a compromise, but yay! That’s perfect! I ordered some 108″ wide flannel in Natural, which should be perfect since the top is 90″ square.
I haven’t decided yet if I will hand or machine quilt this one. I thought I would put it on my quilt frame and get my mom and grandmas to help me quilt it, but I don’t like to ask them to quilt around each star and really I think that’s going to look the best. Any other quilting ideas for me?
Does your son have a hobby? A motif in a contrasting color in each star would be cool, with loops-and-stars meanders in the background. Just an idea.
Flannel should work great. I don't know how I forgot about that. I used flannel on both sides of my nephew's quilt – he wanted a big heavy quilt and he got it. He also told me that he liked the softness of the flannel, that it never feels cold to his skin. (He's now in college in a place that gets damp and very cold in the winter and loves keeping warm.)

What about quilting a 1/4 inch inside each star centre and the same in each block? I did this on a small quick baby quilt and it looked quite good without lots of work.
To my mind, this is the perfect quilt, classic in every way….design, colourway and one can see that it was made with love.

I think it's worth asking your Mom and grandmas to go around each star. Many hands make light work, and they may love that idea too! I think it would be beautiful hand quilted around each star.

I don't know if you have worked with flannel before, but you need to know that it shrinks more than regular cotton. I have not used it myself, but maybe others who have can tell you how many times to wash it, etc. ahead of time. I would like to have that information too!

Well… I think quilting around the stars is a lovely idea. Why don't you want to ask them to do that?
I think quilting around each star would be perfect…why don't you want to ask them to help you do it? It isnt any more work than other patterns…I bet they'd love to be involved!
It would be pure pleasure to quilt around those stars made with such great fabric. And sometimes more fun to work on someone else's project… I'd say, ask them!

It is beautiful. I love the strip piecing around the edges. I thought of flannel when I read the last post since that's what my kids always want on the back but never got back to posting a comment. Glad some other did! It will be a beautiful quilt, and yes, I would ask them if they would help you quilt around each star. It won't be that tedious with several working on it!

I just did a star quilt for a friend's nephew and I did a quarter inch machine quilting around the inside of each star. It looked great…I would highly recommend quilting around the perimeter of the star, inside or out. You will love how it looks. I did mine on my Brother machine, so it wasn't even a longarm and totally doable! I love your color sensibility!

Love this quilt! I don't know if you have started quilting yet, but I like to machine quilt a straight stitchin both sides of the seams on each block, and then hand quilt around the stars and inside the stars. That way the hand quilting can shine, but it speeds up the rest of the quilting.
