First quilt finish of the year 2023! I wonder if I’ll make another one this year that I like more? I don’t know… I really do like this quilt! It’s made with the Ghost Town pattern by @oldredbarnco. It’s a fun pattern to make! I think I will probably revisit it in another color scheme sometime.
My idea was to make a town at sunset. I often go for walks in the winter right at sunset time. We live on an acreage about a mile outside our little village and I love seeing the lights of the town as the sun goes down.
There’s also a poem I love so much which always makes me think of a little English village nestled in the valley with the hilly moors surrounding it. In reality my walk and my town are not quite this picturesque… but I love to dream that I really will live someday in this village with a hill behind that I can climb.
‘and when light begin to show up from the town’ Such simple words yet so perfect!
When laying out my houses, I spent awhile deciding how to lay them out, colorwise. Should I mix up the blues and burgundies and pinks? Or should I have them fade as a real sunset would? Some folks thought I should have burgundy on top, or some thought pink on top… I guess we all see sunsets slightly differently, and I guess each one is different, right?! But I always think of that final moment before the sun goes down, when the top of the sky is dark blue, almost black already and the middle sky is mix of faded blue and faded pink. And bottom of the horizon is the brightest pink and oranges, mixing with the lights of the town.
This quilt is approx. 63″x 76″. Oh yes, and the back is a blend of two yummy flannels from Robert Kaufman! A burgundy with a subtle herringbone pattern, and a navy blue with white flecks. I think it’s the perfect cozy backing. This quilt will be available in my shop. It’s hard to part with it in a way, but I already decided to keep the scrappy sampler that I made recently and since it’s a similar vibe to this quilt, I just don’t feel like I need them both…

What a lovely, truly homey quilt! The colors work beautifully, especially when the theme of the poem runs through it.

Hi Joleen,
I love this quilt and the winter snow scene is the perfect setting. I live in Maine and Edna St Vincent Millay was born north of us along the coast. At one point I did an in-depth look at her life (quilt related). To me, her life could be divided into four distinct categories, I had wanted to make a quilt melding the four seasons and her incredible life. I had sketched vignettes for Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Regretfully, life interrupted further progress past the design stage.
We live in a rural area and I have two horses. Going out for their evening feeding and visiting time is still my favorite time. The quiet, landscape and beauty never fails to amaze me. It’s so cool that as quilters, we can capture the essence of moments in time.
Your fairly recent quilt that was a fairly low volume one captured my fancy. It had nine patches with more or less a neutral color scheme. I made my version this past summer. Called it “Tickled Pink”. As I was making it I reflected that probably none of my family would be the right person to gift this one to. (I set out to make it for myself which I rarely do.). Nonetheless, as my thoughts wandered, my maternal grandmother came to mind. She was the only quilter in my family. They were dairy farmers in Connecticut.
Me: Grandma Knowles, what would you think if I give this quilt to you?” Grandma Knowles: “Why Carla, I’d be tickled pink”. Thus the name.
It wasn’t until decades later that I figured out the saying ‘tickled pink’.
