so ya, i’m still plugging away at my swoon quilt. only two blocks out of the nine left. amazing thing here is that after how many months, i’m still really excited about this one! and it’s going on our bed.
kinda crazy when a quilter has a Sears quilt on their own bed for nine years. so that’s gonna change now!
i laid the seven completed blocks out on my bed just to see how it looked. just trying to decide if this 9 block layout will be big enough, or if I should add another whole row. i like a bed quilt to hang down and properly cover the mattress, but somehow i really like the 3×3 layout, i think it just looks ‘right’, and I’m afraid to add another row. Maybe i should just make a wider plain border around the edge?
anyways, i’m very excited about this one, and i’m gonna hand quilt it too! (i think:))

I love my swoon too, but I have to admit I wish I had made it bigger. It's just not quite big enough for the bed, but too big for the couch.

Odd numbers are visually more pleasing then even numbers. So I would stick with the 9. If there are 3 square in a row, the center is a square. If there are 4, the center is nothing. make sense?

With the 3 X 3 layout you get Swoon blocks down the center of the bed! So I agree, add a wide border. You won't see these borders so much anyway!
I kept mine at 3X3 and used a little wider sashing plus added a 6" wide scrappy border (same prints) to it & it came out a longer perfect size for my highish queen size bed. I love it & my husband is even ia awe.
what about a wide sashing? and an equally wide border? maybe 2.5-3"?

Beautiful. I'd go for the wider plain border myself. Maybe quilted with the swoon star design.
I made a 3×3 swoon, doubled the sashing and added a 5 inch border all around. It isn't big enough for my king sized bed. I would do at least a 3×4 if not a 4×4 if you want to put it on a king sized bed.
I'm having the same debate with this quilt on a queen. I think I'm gonna just do 12 blocks and adjust sashimi so it fits well. I too want it to cover the mattress.
I love your colors – which fabrics did you use? I agree with your readers in suggesting sashing and wide borders… it's gonna be fabulous!
Definitely just sashing and wide borders. At the moment in your photo the 9 blocks sit perfectly on the top of the bed which is where you want them. You can see all the blocks beautifully. Add a border as wide as you need to hang down the side of the bed and perhaps a narrower border for top and bottom as.looking at your photo I don't think you will need to add much length once you have sashed and sewn your Swoon blocks together. Love your colour combinations.
Beautiful!! I just made a swoon quilt for a friend's wedding and loved it. I expected to get tired of it by the 9th block and I didn't! I hand quilted it too and it was phenomenal! I really want to make one for our bed too now, but it'll have to wait. I love the color combinations you've got! You're so good at pairing fabrics!!

Looks gorgeous! I just sewed my first swoon block last night and was over the moon at how my points turned out. I'd go for a thick border. The 3×3 seems to suit that bed frame. Good luck!

Love how you have a Sears quilt. I was the same way until I fell in love with the swoon quilt and put it on my bed too. I just did a border but another row might work out perfect. Good luck.
I recently made a quilt for my bed. While I loved the blocks, toward the end of making them, I was getting tired of the process. I didn't listen to the voice that said to make more so I would have insurance that the quilt was wide enough to hang longer down on the sides of my bed. That fatigue, coupled with a new mattress, meant that my lovely quilt is just perfectly sized quilt but has to be adjusted every time I make my bed so that it hangs just right. All that to say, I would stick to your guns with the layout but add the wide border so that it is long enough.
I agree having one down the center feels right. So my quilt instinct is either wide sashing or two more rows, but two more rows is kinda nuts, so wide sashing.
No shame in the sears quilt though. The quilt we have was a wedding present from my husband's aunt. It doesn't match our room in the least bit, but it keeps us warm. I'm making a bed quilt for my mom and laid the top out on our bed after I ironed it. It was such a different look and kinda refreshing. Add one more bedquilt to my to do list, I suppose!

I made one for a full size bed – following the pattern exactly. It lays wonderfully there. You certainly could widen those sashes!

3×3 is the way to go, but you can also make it bigger with sashing between the blocks, and borders…cant wait to see!
Love it! I made this with 5.5" sashing all around and it is perfect for my queen bed…good drop and the side swoons hit the edges perfectly. Another row is a good option too!
I love your blocks and it looks like they will fit your bed just fine. If you add another row you will only have 2 blocks showing up in the middle of the bed and maybe 1/2 to a 1/3 of the other blocks hangind down the sides.
I just finished my second swoon, this one was 4X4. That is really big. Fit my king with room to spare. For the back I used 1 huge swoon (80 inch square) and gave it a 20 inch border. pretty cool.
