This quilt top has been kicking around for awhile. You may have seen a glimpse of it hanging in the closet here. Let’s see, how did this one come about. It’s hard to talk about my process and inspiration when it’s been such a long time.
Ok, this was what happened. I bought a fat quarter bundle of Picnics and Fairgrounds by Denyse Schmidt, which was only available at JoAnn’s Fabrics, which does not happen to be in Canada, and whose website does not offer to ship to Canada. Thankfully, there were some people selling it on Etsy, because I really loved the vintagey designs in more modern colors. (I think that’s what I like about all her fabrics)
After I had the fabric sitting around for a while, I divided it into two groups, the navy, red, and pink in one group, and the more vibrant blues and greens in the other. I realized later that there WAS actually two color groups, and they were probably similar to what I came up with.
So I decided to make a quilt from each of these stacks, one obviously being for a girl, and one for a boy. Here’s the girl one which I finished earlier. (And in retrospect, that basket quilt is one of those “one in ten” projects that I love the most.)
So now on to this boyish stack. I added a few more greens and blues, and also some blacks and golden yellows. I started out sewing big log cabin/square in square blocks. Impulsively, I decided I didn’t like it, and whacked them all up into quarters. (I don’t have a picture, but I almost wish I’d left it that way..)
So here it is. A bento box quilt, only the pieces don’t line up, because I originally sewed the squares in random sizes. This makes for quite a wild and busy look. And those black pieces in there stand out a bit much… Oh well, I DO know that I love the colors!
On the back I used a cute little bird print with one strip of all my left over pieces. And the binding just adds to the wild and crazy busyness. Not sure that I love the binding either, but I’m trying to use up some of these pieces that never seem to find their way into anything.

The binding was the first thing I noticed — I like it. Also, I like the black — it draws my eye — adds a little oomph! to the quilt.

This quilt is absolutely perfect the way it is. I think it just screams BOY. I love the fabric on the back. Do you remember what it is? The binding is great too. I don't see anything at all that isn't wonderful about this quilt. 😀
I am with all the others that love the binding. Before reading your comment I was set to tell you that I loved how you popped the binding on a busy quilt and got away with it. I just adore the strong colors and pattern. I stick to stripes and dots usually and this would be called neither, but if I had it I would make a quilt to bind with it.

Wow. This quilt is gorgeous. I like that this was a project that you weren't quite sure what to do with… then made a snap decision… and it worked out beautifully! Of course, sometimes those snap decisions don't always work out well (I can say that from experience. LOL). 😉 But this one looks awesome!
