Conclusion on making this quilt: I love this design, I’m definitely going to make another one. The reason this one came about is slightly different than most of my quilts. Awhile ago my two oldest kids wanted to make a bit of money, so together we came up with the idea of them selling some fabric strips. I would choose the fabrics, my daughter would cut the strips, and my son would take the photos, package them, and mail them! I said that for my part of the deal, I would blog about the strips and possibly tempt some of you with them:). I ended up loving these two fabric sets so much, that I just feel like keeping them all and making multiple quilts with them! But for now I decided to take one of each of the two sets and make a quilt to show you how they look.
We put together two different color sets. Each set has 20 2.5″ wide x width of fabric strips. So I used one of each to make this quilt. (small disclaimer, I made a mistake when cutting so I ended up having to cut mine down to 2″ wide, so if you should make a similar pattern to mine, your quilt could end up bigger than mine because you can keep your strips at 2.5″)
With this type of quilt design, I have found some patterns that try to make it easier with strip piecing… but honestly I just find those more confusing. So my method is just to cut everything into squares, arrange it, and sew it back together.
I feel like FilmintheFridges’s Checkered Garden Tutorial would be the closest to an easy way to make this look.
So if you’re interested in these strip sets, you can visit my shop by clicking on the ‘Shop’ at the top of my blog! I wish I had the time to make more example quilts of each of these strip sets to show you all the options, but I’m sure you can imagine them too! There are so many fabrics in these that are long time favourites of mine…

I’m a country gal at heart, live in the woods of Maine. In addition to being a dedicated quilter, I also have two horses and a Blue Heeler Cattle Dog. For me, this wonderful quilt just oozes a warm country feeling. Visions of winter snow, sipping a cup of tea next to the woodstove, riding outside on Noel, sharing with great neighbors and gifting oodles of quilts to family and friends. Joleen, I am always inspired with your unique, wonderful quilts. Hugs from Maine.

The colors in the strip set are beautiful. Have to say I love how you are working with your kids to help them learn how to earn money. Excellent idea! Are they cutting the strips with rulers and rotary blades to ensure accuracy? I will go check out your shop.

Oh shoot – I didn’t know you were based in Canada – that makes the shipping a bit pricey. So I will wish the kids luck with their earnings!!!

This quilt is scrappy loveliness! Looks like your quilt measures about 60”x68” finished. Do you only need 20 jelly roll strips plus ~1.5 yards for the border and 0.75yds binding? Is there a ratio of lights to mediums to darks you’d recommend to achieve the look you did? Thanks.

I so admire your ability to select fabrics and coordinate them to beautiful effect. I’d like to think it’s a learnable skill, but I’m not sure about that. If you ever offer a workshop on this topic, I’d take it! Thank you for sharing your talents.
