This quilt was inspired by a photo of a vintage Turkish rug. I made it into a simple pattern using strips and nine patches. It’s been sitting almost completed for a long time because I had always planned to use it as a pattern in my next book. Problem was, every time I went to make another version of it in different colors, I was just bored and uninspired. I do think it’s a beautiful design, but I didn’t feel like making two or three more in different colors. In the end I decided this was a sign that it wasn’t the type of pattern for me to promote.
I think I’ve talked about it before, but when choosing patterns to include in my books, I’m very particular that they must pass certain criteria. They must be fun to sew and also be open to lots of different options for customizing, even if it’s just colors. I’m also not the type of person to cut out an entire quilt and then construct long strip sets and not have any idea what the quilt will look like till sewing the final steps.
And this quilt was that type. Which I think explains why I could never get myself to make another one. I like to make a few blocks, see what it looks like, and make a few more.
I do love this completed quilt! It makes me think of Bilbo Baggin’s house in The Hobbit. I think it could have lived there possibly?
I had it longarm quilted in a gold thread and the back is a flannel.
It’s interesting to me that I am drawn to this type of design, but the construction method of this one isn’t for me. I made it this way because I was trying to copy the rug in a photo. But when I think of Ashley’s free tutorial for Checkered Garden, I know I’d enjoy the process of making that one! Why have I never?! Maybe I’ll start one today… It’s a similar design but gives a more scrappy look.
Also this quilt is available to purchase in my Etsy shop, along with both Bramble Blooms Quilts!
