i was inspired by Denyse Schmidt’s “Any Way You Slice It” quilt in her first quilt book. Of course I didn’t follow her instructions since I would never use templates unless it was the absolute only way to make the quilt!
so here’s how i did it.
– cut a bunch of 9″ squares out of crazy random fabrics.
– stack 5 (or 4) of these squares.
– make 4 cuts diagonally, making them a bit wonky
– rearrange this stack so that each fabric appears once in each block
– sew them together and square them up to your desired size (probably will be around 8″-8.5″)
does that make any sense? it’s very simple once you just do it. it’s a common technique that’s often called “Stack n Whack” or some thing like that.
you can see my hand quilting here. just free hand circles going around the center of each diamond. i used bright pink perle cotton, which made me choose this pink gingham binding. which ends up being my favorite part of this quilt.

Adorable! I think I need to try this! I see that you have fabric for sale in your shop! Have you ever thought of putting fabric kits together, for example, one for a quilt similar to this? I would be first in line! You have such a knack for colour!

This is probably a dumb question, but how did you get your corners rounded so nicely? I like the look of rounded corners! Was it hard to bind with rounded corners? I'd love to see a tutorial of how to do it.

You use the edge of a saucer, bowl or cup and trace on the rounded edge and then trim. Rounded edges are easier to bind because you just go around them like you do the straight edge of the quilt.

It is wacky:-) – and wonderful!

Jolene, this is so awesome! And thanks for the explanation, I never. Use templates either. Your fabrics, curvy edges and hand quilting just make it!

So cool!! Did you use a pattern for your quilted circles, or just wing it?

Super! Thanks for you wrote how you did it! I like that the way it looks like non-simmetric hand-writing and painting, a little bit сhaotic. Very cute!

This is the most perfect quilt ever! I love absolutely everything the colors (of course), the irregular strings, the hand quilting, the round corner, and that fabric in the backing!!
I'm inspired to do a similar one for my baby due in december, started on friday and today got it prepared for quilting, is the first thing I'll do for him/her and I felt suddenly anxious 🙂
I only have remnants, and don't have a big collection, so It won't be so beautiful, but I want to thank you anyway for the sudden inspiration. Thank you!!
(I wish I had your color sensibility oneday 🙂 )
