This little quilt top was hanging in the closet for at least a year and I’ve finally finished it up now. It started out as a combo of a small photo I saw of a floating pinwheel block like this, and the color inspiration was from the Log Cabin Quilt pictured in the book above.
This block is one of the many I’ve considered adding to my next book. This has been a challenge for me on the book I’m working on now. I have the ‘main’ pattern decided, but I want to add a simple quilt made with a repeating block. I have tried so many different ones but for some reason I end up rejecting them all. I have pretty impossible criteria I guess! I want to be inspired by it, I want to enjoy making it. I need to really like the looks of it in multiple different colorways.
I’ll be honest, I still haven’t totally pinned it down. Clearly it wasn’t this pinwheel block, although I do think this block is pretty sweet. So seeing that I my goal is for my next book is to be ready to purchase the end of November, and I haven’t even decided on the block to feature, let alone make the quilts… it looks like I’ve got a bit of work ahead of me yet! Oh well, I’m not too concerned. Something always seems to inspire me eventually and I refuse to compromise. I’m determined that I’m not going to recommend a quilt block that I don’t really love or that is too hard or unpleasant to make.
I’m currently inspired about one so we’ll see how that goes and you’ll find out in November I guess!
But back to this little quilt. I made a stack of fabric based off of this moody log cabin quilt because I loved the colors of it. Once I realized I wasn’t going to be using this block in my book, I quit at the size of 40″x55″, which is still a nice size for a baby or toddler quilt or an accent piece.
There’s quite a bit of texture in this quilt. Some denim, corduroy, linen, and cute ditsy florals. It’s an unusual palette for me but I quite like it!
It’s for sale in my Etsy shop…and I also put a couple other quilts on a 30% off summer sale.

I’ve always loved pinwheel quilts. I think because my grandmother made me one many, many moons ago! I love your design and can’t wait for your next book!
I can’t figure out how to attach pictures here, but I wanted to show you my process for some little quilts, starting with an idea from you last book. I will try to send you a message on Instagram, and post the photos there.
And, I find I don’t know how to post a group of photos together on Instagram, so they are a string of related photos. Sorry. I guess I have some social media learning to do.
I would love the pattern for this quilt!
I would love the pattern too! Thanks
Make a half square triangle in whatever size you want, slice it in half diagonally. Cut a square same size as HST, cut it diagonally and now sew the two sides together. Four of these make one pinwheel.
You should write pattern directions Suzanne – Bravo!
I’m feeling moody today, and your pinwheel quilt is just perfect and amazing as always. I think it’s even cheering me up 🙂
Another gorgeous quilt Jolene’. I love the dynamic color tension, drama and movement with this quilt. So much so, that I will end up making one of my own down the road. The fun play between the dark and lights along with sprinkle of the red and rust is fascinating. I could look at this one forever. Kudos from Maine.
